<span data-metadata=""><span data-buffer="">EpiC Pilot Study (2019-2022)

  • The purpose of this effort was to conduct an innovative pilot study that will directly inform the feasibility and conduct of a future large-scale (primary) study called EpiC, “Epidemiology and Outcomes of Prolonged Trauma Care – a prospective multi-centre observational study in the Western Cape of South Africa.”
  • EpiC is intended to describe the outcomes of patients with combat-relevant injuries. A pilot study is critical to the successful execution and completion of the future large-scale EpiC study.
  • Aim 1: To create a set of data elements critical for studying how prolonged care affects outcomes of persons with major trauma. These data elements will be used in Aim 2.
  • Aim 2: To conduct a pilot study to assess how key prehospital interventions and prolonged durations of care affect post-injury mortality and morbidity among persons with major trauma. Findings will be critical to inform and develop a future large-scale, multi-centre, cohort study in the same South African setting.
  • Our pilot results indicate the main EpiC study is highly feasible to conduct but with a few minor changes.
